Sample Schedule (First 2 Weeks)
Herd Health Check
Conduct a full health assessment: body condition score, coat, hoof health, udder condition. Record in individual animal cards.
Feeding Programme Setup
Calculate daily dry matter: 3% of body weight. For 450 kg cow: 13.5 kg DM/day from Napier grass (70%), dairy meal (25%), mineral supplements (5%).
Water Supply & Milking Hygiene Audit
Each cow needs 60–80 litres clean water daily. Review milking routine: wash udder, fore-strip, dry with paper towel, post-dip with Iodophor after milking.
Mastitis Testing (CMT)
Conduct California Mastitis Test on all cows. Positive reaction = sub-clinical mastitis. Treat with intramammary antibiotic (Tetroxy LA or Synulox).
Deworming Programme
Deworm all cattle with Albendazole at full therapeutic dose. Use heart-girth tape to weigh cattle for correct dosing.
Tick Control — First Spray
Spray with acaricide (Bayticol, Diazinon, or Triatix). Tick-borne diseases (ECF, Anaplasmosis) are a major cause of dairy cattle mortality in Kenya.
ECF Vaccination
Administer East Coast Fever vaccine (Muguga cocktail) to unvaccinated animals. ECF is the most economically important cattle disease in Kenya.
