Sample Schedule (First 2 Weeks)

Day 1

Pen Preparation

Construct or clean pig pens: concrete floor (easy to clean), covered roof, ventilation at upper walls, individual feeding space (45 cm/pig), and a slatted dunging area. Disinfect with Virkon-S or Jeyes Fluid.

Critical
Day 3

Source Weaner Piglets

Purchase Large White, Landrace, or Duroc × Large White crossbred weaners (8–10 weeks old, 12–15 kg). Source from reputable farms with documented vaccination history.

Critical
Day 5

Quarantine & Initial Health Check

Quarantine new pigs for 7 days before mixing. Check for: respiratory distress, diarrhoea, skin lesions, and lameness. Confirm vaccination status.

Critical
Day 7

Deworming & Acaricide Treatment

Deworm all pigs with Ivermectin injection (0.3 mg/kg subcutaneous). Ivermectin also controls mange mites — a common and economically important pig health problem in Kenya.

Critical
Day 10

Feeding Programme — Starter Phase

Feed grower starter ration (18% protein, 14 MJ DE/kg): 1.0–1.5 kg/pig/day split into 2 feeds. Always provide clean water ad libitum. Pigs cannot regulate heat — ensure water access in hot weather.

Critical
Day 14

Two-Week Weight Check

Weigh all pigs (target: 20–22 kg at 10 weeks old). Identify underperformers — they may have worm burden or sub-clinical PRRS.
